New Artist Profile: Discover the Surprising Techno Style of Walter Wayne

Croatian techno artist Walter Wayne has just released Twisted, the EP follow-up to his breakout debut album Synchronize. Extraordinarily, the two releases were pretty much back-to-back, with Twisted dropping just a month after its LP forebear. With another single on the way this Friday, it’s fair to say Wayne stands to be one of those prodigal artists who are able to release tracks at a dizzying pace while keeping the quality extremely high. With techno like this, however, no one will be complaining about keeping up.

While his Synchronize LP was concentrated on melody and ambient sound design, almost bordering on progressive house, Wayne has decided to take Twisted, well, twisted. Taking his style in an altogether different, dark techno direction, Wayne uses a number of techniques to get the sound he wants. Taking cues from legends like Kraftwerk, modern deep techno artists like Monq and even artists from other genres like Camo & Krooked and Misanthrop, Twisted uses various synths and programs to create lots of unique sounds.

Case in point: EP opener  “Crows” starts out with a classic techno melody before launching into and combining with some of Wayne’s now characteristic progressive sounds found on Synchronize but it also uses some very ravey dark synths layered over top of a rather minimal, snare-heavy beat. The same track also incorporates some subtle vapor wave synths that subtly tie the more techno-style melodies together. “Crows” is a great example of the layering and composition that takes a fun, ravey EDM track to another, more complex level.

Listening to such complicated composition, one might think Wayne has classical training but in fact his background is in engineering. Just as good for techno, really, and it also explains the layering and sound design that went into Twisted. Another highlight where we can see this sound engineering is in the EP’s penultimate track, “Line 172.” Here, the synths border on experimental as Wayne plays with sinewaves in almost every bit of the track.

He also does this soundwave play in “Through the Night,” which, on the high registers, seems like a literal experiment where Wayne tried to see how high he could pitch the oscillator before it became intolerable. It seems he his just the right level, as the track is still highly danceable, deep and fun all at the same time.

With his upcoming single “Robot Dreams” due out this Friday, Wayne seems to be going even deeper and darker, with heavy bass throughout the track and a sick and “twisted” break that should make most heavy D&B and bass music producers shake in their collective boots. If Walter Wayne has anything to say about it, deep and dark techno will be making a comeback shortly if not now, bringing both a depth and skill level that rivals some of the best sound designers in the game.

The Synchronize LP and Twisted EP are available to stream of purchase on Beatport, Spotify, Apple Music and GooglePlay. “Robot Dreams” drops Friday, June 5 on Wayne’s SuperPosition label and can be pre-ordered on Beatport.

Who Is Bronson? Odesza Tells All About Their New Side Project

Bronson, the new project between Odesza and Golden Features, is easily one of the most anticipated new projects of the year. Even in spite of everything going on in the world, that musicians are able to continue to collaborate and put out new music is a blessing on its own.

One of the biggest questions about the collaborative project is how it came to be. In a new statement from Odesza, they explain that there was no “specific objective or goal in mind” when they started working together. They did it because they were friends and had a mutual admiration for each other — as they started collaborating, the project itself was able to “take on a life of its own.”

The full album was written and recorded over a period of three years while both artists were touring, so it was done mostly over email, video chat, and trading stems and project files back and forth. Working together helped both artists to expand their own comfort zones and ultimately forced them to become better artists because of it.

You can listen to their first two singles below. The album is out July 17 and is available now to pre-order and pre-save digitally and pre-order the physical LP at the official BRONSON store.

Your EDM Premiere: GLXY’s New Album Is Finally ‘Falling’ on Shogun Tomorrow

After years of beautiful singles, collabs and EPs on labels like Hospital, Liquicity, D&BA, Soul Trader and, of course, Shogun, GLXY are releasing their debut album called Research and Development this coming Monday. After teasing the hell out of the largely liquid but also funky and deep offering with three singles, including a collab with DRS called “She Sings for Me,” the release of their flagship LP promises beautiful sound design, lots of liquid and some interesting surprises.

Though it’s their first album, Research and Development still promises to be a seminal work for GLXY; a jumping off point and a portends for where the duo will take their sound from here. Spoiler alert: it’s going to be epic.

GLXY are unapologetically melodic and liquid in their style usually, but Research and Development has so much more to it. From actual analog strings to precision timed beats to unparalleled snares to some really deep bass (see: title track), they’re taking the complexity of their work up quite a few notches in this LP while still staying true to their roots and, in fact, the roots of liquid jungle.

Our Your EDM premiere for today is the track “Falling” which incorporates all the above-mentioned elements in one incredibly complex yet utterly beautiful track. With a deep bass synth stringing itself through the track just over the actual bass drum, the snares syncopate to the phrase transitions in a really interesting way, changing themselves up back and forth.

There’s not really a main melody in “Falling” per se, but more a number of melodies that work together in different parts of the song. The two vox samples echo over each other while another synth melody tracks the rolling drums by fading in an out in time with the sub synths. There’s also lots of ambient design in the background but no one part of this track is fully forward; all the parts work together to create a real composition. This track is truly the sum of its parts and truly special.

If one is going to put out a melodic, compositional album in a time where fans seem to either be focused on bass or synths, Research and Development is the way to do it. GLXY has reminded the raving public why liquid is important in drum and bass, and why, with their taking it to the next level with this LP, it’s going to continue to have a stronghold in bass music.

Research and Development drops on Shogun Audio tomorrow, April 17. Click here to pre-order and pre-save.

Your EDM Premiere: Mako Pays Homage to the Late Andy Skopes With ‘Light Cycle’ on His New LP

Mako has been busy in the last couple of years, both in running his own Utopia label and releasing tracks, remixes and collabs on other labels like Fokuz, Ultra, Warm Communications and Subtitles Music. Throughout all this spitfire-fast releasing, however, he’s also been working on a massive album for which he returned to Metalheadz to release. Per its title, Ouevre is meant to be the seminal album traversing Mako’s career and body of work.

Ouevre, which will release this Friday, plays almost like a compilation, showcasing all of Mako’s different styles and influences over the years. From ambient-flavored darkstep like “The Window” to liquidy get-down jungle to fully ambient, almost beatless tracks like the album’s closing track, “Passive Aggressor,” the album shows both where Mako’s been and where he’s going. With his base of classical D&B beats, he experiments with sound and sound design in Ouevre, so while it feels like a compendium of drum and bass history, it also has a central theme that’s very modern.

There are a couple of collaborations on Ouevre: a liquid groover called, funnily enough, “Liquid Groover” with Villem & Fields and a deep, ambient darkstep viber he made with Andy Skopes before he passed. “Light Cycle” must be a very important track for Mako to include on this LP, and Your EDM is honored to premiere it.

For those unaware D&B producer Andy Skopes passed away last January after a long battle with cancer. One of his last EPs was on Metalheadz as well and shows his own style a a solid match to Mako’s. “Light Cycle” is a beautiful homage to the late artist with a punchy darkstep bassline and a beat that has that perfect balance of kick to snare that both Mako and Skopes do so well.

The intro to “Light Cycle” contains some melodic ambient tones but also some interesting sound design in the background, with whisper samples fading in and out. Far from being eerie or creepy, the sounds lighten up the track along with a melodic synth as the drum track layers in. Mako and Skopes must have played with the tones and drops of each layer in the track quite a bit to get all the pieces to flow together in the way they do.

It’s clear Mako was sitting on “Light Cycle” for quite a while, waiting for the right time to release it on Ouevre. It fits right in with the rest of the tracks but there’s definitely something special with this collab as well. “Light Cycle” is a highlight in an album of highlights and really underlines both Mako’s and Skopes’s “body of work.”

Ouevre drops this Friday, April 10 on Metalheadz. Click to here pre-save or pre-order on multiple platforms.

Desiigner & PnB Rock Dropping A Joint Album Next Year

Desiigner and PnB Rock are on the verge of dropping a joint album.

Desiigner is currently working on his own upcoming album The Life Of Desiigner but so far there is no release date for the project. Now there are talks that he is working on a joint LP with PnB Rock. The Brooklyn rapper announced the project on Twitter a few days ago. “PNB AND DESIIGNER ALBUM… coming soon,” he tweeted. Desiigner has come under criticism from some rap fans recently who claimed that he dropped off. He responded on Instagram saying that he is far from dropped off.

“For all them haters out there man,” the rapper said while showing off his house and luxury car. “I don’t want to hear all that sh*t about Desiigner fell off, Desiigner never fell nowhere. I fell into a motherf***** mansion that I just bought in L.A., you know what am saying. Thank you to all my fans the album coming soon.”

The “Panda” rapper has been relatively quiet since score hit breakout hit single and a couple other notable collaborations. Earlier this year, he released a music video for his song with Gucci Mane, “Liife.” The “Tiimmy Turner” MC has been teasing his upcoming album and a mixtape for the past couple of months so naturally some fans are saying that they don’t believe that he will drop a project with PnB Rock anytime soon. So now its up to Desiigner to prove his haters wrong and drop something, whether it be his own personal project or this joint effort.

PnB Rock is currently gearing up to release his own debut album, Catch These Vibes, and earlier this year he released his GTTM: Going Thru The Motions mixtape. He then went on to get featured on XXL Freshman Class of 2017 which help further push his career this year.

We takin’ this one to the whole ‘nother level gutter style thug style
You feel me, things that we can only do as a real G
We ain’t dead yet

Hit me, I got my Hennessy find ya foes
In a room full of niggas tryin’ to hide ya hoes
I’m gettin’ high off buddha cause the times be slow
I keep my mind on dough you never find me broke
And who me? A nigga livin’ life like a G
In that artillery keepin’ niggas off of me
I can’t sleep livin’ in these wicked times, peep
Niggas after me cause they see I’m stackin’ G’s and heat
You can holler if you want to, please!!
I ain’t runnin’ with no punk crew be, bleed!!
Enemies and my range is on, you’re in the danger zone
My fuckin’ game is strong, now hotline
You suckas better find ya mind I got mine
From hustlin’ and bustin’ them rhymes
To my niggas up in Quentin, Down on Rikers Isle
Stay rile, but a nigga gotta use his styles

These, niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild
Bitch-made ass niggas don’t know my style
These, niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild
Bitch-made ass niggas don’t know my style

I could be wrong but I never got along with cops
It’s like they stuck from makin’ niggas duck from Glocks
And all the time, my mind’s full of thoughts of ends
I’m still rollin’ my bucket but I bought me a Benz (tadow)
My fake friends say they love me but I know they lie
Cause in the dark see they hearts full of homicide
My mama cried when they took me off to jail
Only me inside the cell, straight locked up in this hell
I hear some sucker screamin’ like the demon’s inside
Will ’em away in the mornin’, only the strong survive
I cry, but in my own way swallow my pride
Pick a reason to hide from all the niggas that die
Cemetery full of brothers I buried it’s goin’ down
Even now I wonder will I still be around
My hometown is the gutter I was born a wild
I came up out this dust with my heartless style

These, niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild
Bitch-made ass niggas don’t know my style
These, niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild
Bitch-made ass niggas don’t know my style

I remember Uptown, run catch a kiss
Listenin’ to Mr. Magic
Cuttin’ up the hits And even though I had a habit
Makin’ words rhyme I was caught up in the madness
Juvenile thugs come on
I tell the whole story nothin’ but truth
Halloween throwin’ eggs from the project roofs
And Pete and Lee young G’s with a gift of gab
Tryna hook up with the hookers who was quick to stab Remember mama’s cookin’, no school straight hookin’
And tryin’ to get with light skinned cause she good lookin’
And jumpin’ over turnstiles cause we ain’t payin’
Call the cuties cuss words but we only playin’
I’m prayin’ I can get a buck no luck
I had to move around a lot cause my moms was stuck
I had family but I was way too wild
Had to move to the West to regain my style

These, niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild
Bitch-made ass niggas don’t know my style
These, niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild
Bitch-made ass niggas don’t know my style (my nigga scream)
Niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild
Bitch-made ass niggas don’t know my style
These, niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild
Bitch-made ass niggas don’t know my style
These, niggas don’t know my style
Quick to smile, juvenile, was a problem child
Try to put me in the cross, but my force was wild

Tech N9ne – What If It Was Me (feat. Krizz Kaliko) (The Storm Deluxe Edition Album)

[Intro: Tech N9ne]
Free your mind, and remember
Winners are not people who never fail
But people who never quit
All I ever wanted was to sell
Records to the people make a lot of mil’, yessir
Rap to me, it was the holy grail
I’m gonna go and do it, I’m never gonna fail
Yeah, but first I gotta make it out of Hell

[Verse 1: Tech N9ne]
Wake up and I see crime
All of us we on it’s eat time
My homies love me yelling "Peace N9ne"
At the same time, throwing B signs
Throwing em back and repping the street, I’m
Doing music and I’m writing beast rhymes
But my V-Slimes, had no weak minds
Got with the music, started a group and we shine
Music gave us hella hope
Made it up out of the bangin’ and sellin’ dope
We were stronger than a bottle of Yoke
Till one of our members found a kid to grope
Then your honor gave the peddy the rope
Losing a man, the band began to slope
Never did think a plan was damned to croak
So doing it solo-dolo stands the G.O.A.T
Started making hella LP’s
2000, all the way to five, felt free
Because of the hand the label dealt me
But in ‘06 Fontana helped us melt cheese
Number one independent gonna be spending a ton of funds, in a minute
That’s when the government want the sums, then I send it
In a couple of months I’m done and replenished

[Bridge: Tech N9ne]
Everywhere I go, I’m selling out the show
Around the world I kill em and everybody know
Whenever we hit the studio and Tecca Nina drop, hot
Even though I will go toe to toe if somebody bang on me
But I’m rolling in the dough and I’m really respected and protected
Chances of me getting shot, not

[Verse 2: Tech N9ne]
Everyone loving the Tech
Publishin’, I get a check
Loving the cities that with me, the people that call me the best
I don’t have any regret, but it’s a bit of neglect
Missing my babies I love em and none of ’em leaving me yet
Feeling good like a villain should
In a mansion, but I’m still in hoods
Not like Trayvon, J’s on
Khaki shorts with a red tee like I will and could
I can conceal it my permits say
If evil happens to swerve this way
Hope nobody deserves quick spray
I feel an angelic surge this day
They feeling my songs
Been doing it long
They want me to sell ’em my CD right outta my home
Cos I’m in the zone
I’m putting em on in front of the store when a couple of police won’t leave me alone
Why they tripping?
I fit the description
It’s two of them rushing me I’m on a solo mission
To get people to listen, but they pushing and kicking me
I’m on the ground when they telling me, "Cause of a gun suspicion"
It was in my pocket, ain’t trying pop it
When they scared of a brother with a gun no one can stop it
Then one of em lost it, and then I was shot quick
Officers took me to heaven, I’m dead and with multiple rockets
Didn’t matter I was good and living inside a mansion next to ball players
‘Cause of the move he made was drastic now I lay in a casket carried by my pallbearers
Fears what I see, making em kill a G
Rotten apple in the batch; don’t tell the rest to flee
This happened in Baton, R-O-U-G-E, even I fit the description
What if it was me?

[Verse 3: Krizz Kaliko]
What if it was me
What if I never got the one chance to be
Everything and everywhere I go, I wouldn’t see
If by your hand you took that from me
But what if it were me?
Laying right there
I’ll never get up again, it’s so unfair
My babies cry out
You never cared
Things that we do make each other so scared
So what if it was you there?
(Should I just) Take your life
(Should I bust) Make your wife widowed, withered, hugging the pillow
The scent of you still on her
Spirit she feels on her
The whole world weeps
Blood we all spill on her
And I know, it’s ill will; the pill’s hard to swallow
How should I feel when I’m being followed (followed)
By the words that you say to me? (Crazy)
And you saved my life, take my life

[Outro: Krizz Kaliko & *Tech N9ne*]
I gotta fight, all of the night with cops, crips, bloods with sore fists
I gotta fight, all of the night with cops, crips, bloods with sore fists
I gotta fight, all of the night with cops, crips, bloods with sore fists
*I gotta fight, all of the night with cops, crips, bloods with sore fists and them Nazis*
