Steve Aoki Remixes Iconic Cowboy Bebop Theme “Tank!” [LISTEN]

To celebrate the release of COWBOY BEBOP on November 19, Netflix hosted an exclusive listening party and conversation with Japanese-American DJ/producer Steve Aoki to discuss his exclusive remix of “Tank!,” the renowned theme song by acclaimed Japanese composer Yoko Kanno. Aoki performed this one-time remix at the Los Angeles premiere of COWBOY BEBOP on November 11, which was simultaneously live-streamed on Aoki’s social media platforms.

The virtual conversation focused on Aoki’s process and his inspiration for remixing Kanno’s iconic anime soundtrack as a Japanese American. As an award-winning artist and one of the most in-demand entertainers in the world as well as a longtime fan of COWBOY BEBOP, Aoki’s remix exemplifies that music is universal, timeless, and transcends across countries while paying homage to the Japanese roots of the series.

Steve Aoki debuts his underground side-project with new single “Aurora”

Steve Aoki has never been one to be pigeon holed into a specific genre, though ‘mainstage-centric’ is definitely the vibe he gives off. Still, his most recent album, Neon Future IV, showed off a lot of diversity and he continues it this year with a release on MDLBEAST Records and a new side project.

MDLBEAST Records welcomes Aoki’s project Ninja Attack to the label with his new release “Aurora.” Riding on deep, driving bass lines and minimal dark melodies via an adventurous leftfield offering, “Aurora” is right at home in the underground house and techno venues around the globe.

“Aurora” is the next step towards the release of MDLBEAST’s forthcoming “SOUNDSTORM Vol. 1” album, following previous forward-thinking singles – Salvatore Ganacci’s “Fight Dirty,” Cosmicat’s “Toxic Romance,” Butch’s “Testarossa” and R3HAB, Skytech & Fafaq’s “Sorry I Missed Your Call.”

SOUNDSTORM was a cultural catalyst for Saudi youth, which will be back in action in December 2021 with a star-studded line-up. Until then, keep an eye out for further releases from this exciting imprint, and check out “Aurora” below.

Steve Aoki & Armin van Buuren Drop First-Ever Collab Together “Music Means Love Forever” [LISTEN]

Longtime friends and peers Steve Aoki and Armin van Buuren have finally teamed up together on “Music Means Love Forever.”

The anthem is a perfect fusion of both artists’ distinct sounds, working in a mix of Aoki’s big room electro energy and Armin’s signature progressive trance stylings. The sentiment of the track is as wholesome as it gets — “Music Means Love Forever — Move, Unite, Dance, Together!”

Previously in 2020, the EDM titans swapped remixes — Armin and Avian Grays provided a remix for Aoki’s “I Love My Friends” with Icona Pop and Aoki dropped his ‘I Am The Captain Now’ Remix for Armin’s “Mr. Navigator.”

Steve Aoki says of the release:

I’m so excited to share this new track Armin van Buuren & I collaborated on together, Music Means Love Forever. It’s a song celebrating dance music and all of the emotions that come with experiencing it. We played it out live together at Electric Love Festival this summer in a true celebration getting the chance to dance together once again.

Armin van Buuren states:

After remixing each other’s tracks, Steve and I thought it’d be a great idea to join forces in the studio. I am a great admirer of Steve and I’m loving our brand-new collab. The title is pretty self-explanatory; music is a universal language and a language of love to many people as well. I can’t wait for everyone to make memories to this track!

Steve Aoki Partners with Seth Green Studio to Produce the First Episodic Series to Launch on the Blockchain

Steve Aoki has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to new trends. So it’s no surprise that he’s taking the blockchain to a new level by teaming up with Seth Green’s Stoopid Buddy Stoodios to produce DOMINION X, the first episodic series to launch on the  blockchain.

Minted from a custom smart contract with unique interactive traits built directly into the NFT via Ether Cards, Dominion X is Aoki’s third major NFT project in 2021 alone, following his successful Dream Catcher and Neon Future drops. Dominion X’s Debut Short ‘Level 1’ introduces us to the world of Character X, a character personified with Aoki’s signature fang face logo, and his obliviously contentious relationship with the diminutive Chonk and Swole. You can watch their worlds collide in this “1 of 1” animated NFT debut short as well as get a chance to own any one of the 15 individual scenes that make up the short and win one of the physical puppets used in the actual making of the short.

“I first met Seth and the team at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios when I was invited to do a cameo on Robot Chicken back in 2015,” Steve Aoki recalls. “Ever since then we’ve been trying to find another chance to work together. The idea of launching the first ever ‘TV’ series on the blockchain really excited me. We realized that through NFT’s we can combine the traditional stop-motion animation that Stoopid Buddy Stoodios is known for with innovative fan-driven concepts that I’m passionate about: collectibles, community building and gaming. And I love the fact that we’ve been able to bring Character X, a creature that literally personifies me, to life in a completely new world with new characters & new adventures.”

“Collaborating with an artist like Steve Aoki guarantees you’ll make something unique, accessible, and out of this world,” states Seth Green. “We love pushing the boundaries of entertainment through technology and are beyond excited to bring this experience to an audience.”

It arrives on August 2nd via Nifty Gateway, the exclusive NFT marketplace owned by Gemini founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and on

“2021 has been an incredible year of growth and creativity in the crypto space and it inspires me to see artists and teams pushing the boundaries of what is possible,” Tyler Winklevoss adds. “Launching the first episodic series on the blockchain that fans can now own is the kind of novel use-case that only the NFT medium can provide. I am thrilled that this is launching on Nifty Gateway.”

Steve Aoki Drops Afro-Beat Banger “Siliwa Hay” with Chemical Surf, Zafrir and Max-Africana

Steve Aoki is no stranger to experimenting with global sounds. After all, he’s a global icon himself, and one of the most prominent Asian-American entertainers around. Now, for his latest single, “Siliwa Hay” he’s going for a truly global production, enlisting Brazilian production duo Chemical Surf, Israeli producer Zafrir, and Ghanaian vocalist Max-Africana for an Afro-beat inspired track, that still has that unique Steve Aoki flair.

The track opens with a snare building up in the background alongside an African chant. After the buildup churns through, there’s a vocal chant/refrain. The drop is pretty much a four-four beat, with some tech-y synths in the background. However, it’s the vocal chant that differentiates the track from anything else. According to Zafrir, the vocal hook is a Ghanaian chant. Siliwa apparently translates to “flow and all the good things will be with you.” Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. The track continues with its incessant groove and worldly flair. Here’s what Steve had to say about “Siliwa Hay.”

“‘Siliwa Hay’ is my first collaboration with Chemical Surf and Zafrir, and it’s truly a global one. With Chemical Surf being from Brazil, Zafrir from Israel, and the track featuring vocals from Max-Africana, we were able to all come together to create this dance floor anthem that brings together each of our electronic sounds with a global rhythm that I can’t wait for you all to dance to.”

Check out the latest from Steve Aoki, Chemical Surf and Zafrir, “Siliwa Hay” featuring Max-Africana out now on Dim Mak.

Steve Aoki Designed a $3,000 Bulgari Watch Made for Raves

Steve Aoki is undoubtedly one of the busiest people in dance music. Before COVID, he was racking up 200+ shows a year, runs a label, has a charity, hell he even opened up his own pizza joint. His entrepreneurial spirit never seems to be quenched, and now he’s helped design a new watch “made for raves” in collaboration with Bulgari.

As Bloomberg points out in their interview with Aoki, Bulgari and EDM don’t necessarily belong in the same sentence, and certainly not at $3,050. That being said, there will always be people who appreciate the finer things in life, and who also love to get sweaty at shows. The signature feature of the watch, says Bloomberg, is a Superluminova dial that lights up, “perfect for waving around at your next festival in lieu of a glow stick.”

Speaking about the collaboration, Aoki said, “Bulgari is art. With certain brands, they get to the point of a legacy where they just never depreciate. I’m a collector; I collect physical art and I’m a NFT guy. Bulgari just has that premium. It goes up in value and it has a history and culture. And it takes a lot of time, and being masters of your work, to get there. They’re just so high caliber, it’s such an honor to be able to work with them at this level.”

You can visit and sign up to be notified when the watch is available.

Steve Aoki, GATTÜSO, and Aukoustics Reimagine R.E.M.’s Classic “Losing My Religion” ft. MKLA

Repurposing old rock classics for EDM covers and remixes has become oddly common over the past couple of years — maybe it’s a lack of original ideas, maybe it’s an appeal to an older audience, maybe the artist has a true appreciation for the classics. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. This week, Steve Aoki, GATTÜSO, and Aukoustics reimagine R.E.M.’s classic “Losing My Religion” with help from MKLA.

“Losing My Religion” is, by far, R.E.M.’s biggest song, outstreaming their next biggest song by three times on Spotify. And it’s for good reason. The melancholy tone of the song paired with the comparatively sparse lyrics present a wonderful depiction of, well, losing your religion.

And while this group of producers might have succeeded in creating a dancefloor anthem for the current era (whether they did or not is entirely subjective), it’s hard to deny that they lose a lot of the meaning of the song in the recreation.

“Losing My Religion is my favorite of all R.E.M. songs, and I loved them growing up as a kid,” Steve Aoki shares. “It was time to bring it back and make a 2021 version for the dancefloor that people wouldn’t expect. We flipped it and made it special.”

GATTÜSO adds, “Steve had a clear vision for how it would need to be sculpted and I learned a lot in the process. It’s great to see this plan come together after a lot of work, and I’m excited for everyone to hear it.”

You can listen to it below.

Dim Mak Mixes Retro and Fresh Fashion with 1990’s-Inspired ‘Dim Mak x the Powerpuff Girls’ Capsule

Dim Mak’s latest clothing drop tugs at the heartstrings of 90’s kids everywhere.

The record label and lifestyle brand, led by the one and only Steve Aoki, reveals a fresh collaboration with The Powerpuff Girls.

The retro streetwear capsule creates nostalgia for the Cartoon Network. The capsule’s aesthetic uses bold graphics, retro designs and plenty of color, applied to a range of classic silhouettes.

Among the most iconic pieces of the collection are a range of tees and sweatshirts that depict Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup teaming up to take down their notorious nemesis, Mojo Jojo. Perhaps more importantly than the style the capsule offers, is then unifying message behind the collaboration.

Aoki shares in a statement:

“Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup fight for justice and defeat the bad guys all while being unapologetically themselves. Raised by women, my superheroes were my mother and my sisters. To value kindness, compassion, and lead with empathy but also stand and fight for the values integral to you was their code. They taught me that no matter what anyone says or does be whoever you want to be … by any means necessary!”

The series debuted last July amid the pandemic, as Tomorrowland’s flagship in-person event was forced to cancel. Around the World was groundbreaking to say the least, marking one of the first major festivals to go digital and winning a prestigious award for digital design and development.

Last year’s event hosted exclusive performances from Katy Perry, David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Steve Aoki, Tiësto, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Eric Prydz, Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens and many more, which ticketholders could access for a limited amount of time following the live broadcast. Michiel Beers, co-founder of Tomorrowland, previously shared of the concept: “For us it’s a bit re-inventing the festival experience, but we truly believe that we can bring the spirit of Tomorrowland and entertainment at the highest level to people and homes around the globe.”

Tomorrowland is remaining as optimistic as possible for its proposed dates, set for end of August and early September. Beers just revealed to Billboard, “We’re still positive, although we realize we’re in a very complex situation.”

Steve Aoki, NERVO & The Magician feature on Deezer’s Beethoven Remixed

Classical pieces of music like “In The Hall of The Mountain King,” “Adagio for Strings,” “Symphony No. 5,” “Winter from Four Seasons,” and more have been remixed over time in the electronic music world. But never before has there been a concerted effort, especially from a streaming platform, to gather remixes for a specific composer.

Beethoven Remixed, an extensive, 14-track release, gives music fans the chance to hear their favorite electronic artists mash up the concert hall with the dance floor. Each track features innovative, modern-day reimaginings of some of classical music’s most iconic compositions, such as “Moonlight Sonata,” the most popular piano piece sampled by the featured DJs. This boundary-pushing and first-of-its-kind release combines the timeless sounds of classical music, with the infectious vibrancy of contemporary electronica, like never before.

Highlights include a remix from Steve Aoki, who delivers a slick, club-ready take on the iconic “Pathétique Sonata,” while losing none of the sophisticated emotion that characterises the original composition.

“Out of all the compositions that I heard from Beethoven that I was able to remix, I picked ‘Pathétique’ because it spoke to me the most,” Steve Aoki explains. “When I’m in the studio and I’m listening to all the different samples or different ways that I could remix, I heard elements in “Pathétique” that I knew I could start tinkering with. And as I went down that road, it just felt natural.”

Dutch duo Blasterjaxx rework the similarly cherished “Moonlight Sonata,” juxtaposing its understated beauty with a mammoth drop. Aussie twins NERVO opt for a more refined, cinematic reinterpretation of the same composition, while Parisian rave queen Anetha sculpts it into a pounding techno cut.

NERVO added: “We chose the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ because the piano playing is nothing we could ever do. It was such a privilege to be able to work with that, and 132 bpm is great for a dance record and the sample worked well with that! We added the main melody with a cello, which added warmth to the record. We played around with this, we thought we would go harder with a synth sound, but ended coming back to the cello.”

Beethoven Remixed is part of Deezer’s “Originals” series and is a companion piece to the contemporary classical piano album Beethoven Recomposed.

Deezer’s Beethoven Remixed is available to stream worldwide today. Check it out here.

These things take time to build and it all started when I started doing more of the Latin collaborations — it was then that I started planting the seeds,” Aoki told Billboard. “I’ve gotten so much support from my Latin fanbase and I’ve built a bond with them and its culture. Their acceptance has not only helped me collaborate with Latin artists, but it’s also now allowed me to be part of the development and nurturing of Latin artists too.”

The first signing on the label is “anti-boyband” AQUIHAYAQUIHAY with their pop-tinged R&B track “Ya No Es Igual.”

“The idea of launching with AQUIHAYAQUIHAY really cements where we want Dim Mak En Fuego to land,” says Bryan Linares, En Fuego head of marketing. “We could’ve come out with a straight reggaeton record but coming out with them feels very authentic to us because we come from the underground.”

Steve Aoki Goes J-Pop With Awesome Remix of “Ninja Re Bang Bang”

We all know that Steve Aoki is one of the most prolific producers in terms of seeking out global talent. He’s already had two major collabs with K-Pop stars, now the Japanese American DJ is going J-Pop. Steve Aoki has remixed Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s 2013 hit “Ninja Re Bang Bang.” American audiences actually might recognize the track as it’s been featured in both the animated film Sing and the latest John Wick movie. The original is already a pretty bouncy number; Steve Aoki’s remix takes the energy up a notch and throws in some little unique flairs that only the Dim Mak head honcho could provide.

As far as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, she is a former blogger turned J-pop star who has over 7 million followers across various platforms. American pop stars such as Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande are admitted fans. “Ninja Re Bang Bang” also has more than 65 million views on YouTube, so it’s a bona fide hit. The most impressive part of the remix is that while it’s unmistakably a J-pop song, Aoki still made it uniquely Aoki-like. If you’ve never heard J-pop before this is a great introduction, while all the Steve Aoki vibes makes the remix a stand-out on its own.

Check out Steve Aoki’s remix of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s J-pop hit “Ninja Re Bang Bang.” Out now on Dim Mak under license from Asobi Music.

Three weeks ago, Rave Family announced Electric Blockaloo, an electronic music festival to be held within Minecraft on June 25-28, 2020. Advertised as the biggest digital festival in music history, the full lineup out today supports that claim.

Electric Blockaloo will feature 65 artist hosted stages and over 850 performers, with attendees being treated to performances from the far reaches of the music spectrum, including: , Steve Aoki, Sherelle, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Seth Troxler, Felix da Housecat, Todd Terry, MK, Maya Jane Coles, Skream, STS9, Khruangbin, Galantis, and Louis the Child to name a few.

They’ll be joining previously announced artists such as Jauz, Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex, Higher Ground, KSHMR, A-Trak, Nicole Moudaber, ZHU, Nora en Pure, Claude VonStroke, Claptone, Soul Clap, Lane 8 and over eight hundred more.

To ensure that rights holders are paid for the use of their music in the festival, Electric Blockaloo has partnered with streaming platform Mixcloud. Rave Family CEO Jackie McGuire explains, “One of the biggest challenges for digital festivals is making sure that artists are compensated for the use of their music. We knew that in order to create a sustainable digital music event platform, we had to take care of that.  With their advanced content ID system and unique music licenses,  Mixcloud has been a great partner and we are excited to be leading the movement to pay artists fairly.”

Upon entering the festival, attendees or “Loozers,” are given free range of the grounds, with the ability to jump from stage to stage at their own pace, using replicas of the famed blue Doctor Who Tardis. Over 65 stages have been carefully curated and envisioned directly by the artists and labels themselves. From Red Blocks, a take on the famed Colorado amphitheater, to Thunder Mifflin, the coolest office in Scranton, PA, there will be plenty of familiar locations for Loozers to explore. Artists have had full creative control of their stage designs, from Sacha Robotti’s SlothAcid stage, Steve Aoki’s blood sport Dim Mak Dojo, KSHMR’s Dharma Temple, Claptone’s Masquerade Stage, Maceo Plex’s Blade Runner inspired Ellum, a Higher Ground Space Station and Claude VonStroke’s Dirtybird Campout and Bass Lodge, which features nostalgic activities and games.

Rave Family remains committed to its philanthropic roots in harm reduction at live events, and aims for the Electric Blockaloo community to share that passion for charitable initiatives. When purchasing a ticket, festival-goers have the opportunity to donate to a number of charities including The Bail Project, a national fund aimed at preventing incarceration and combating racial and economic disparities in the bail system, Black Lives Matter, and ByeByePlastic, a movement to remove single use plastics from the music industry as a whole. HeadCount, a platform that harnesses the power of live music to stage voter registration drives, will also allow ticket buyers to register to vote during checkout.

Ticket prices start at $10 and include access to the festival for the debut weekend, as well as three special encore weekends for those fans who can’t see all 65 stages in one! VIP Add-Ons start at $15 and include access to exclusive worlds, stages, and artist sets! VIPs will also get free access to “Early Arrival” and “Group Camping,” to make the experience even more authentic. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, June 12 at 12pm EST.

Joel Zimmerman, WME’s Former Global Head of Electronic Music, Leaves Agency Amid Cutbacks

As major ticketing companies and agencies in music struggle with a complete lack of live events for the foreseeable future, Variety has exclusively reported that Joel Zimmerman (different Joel), WME’s former Global Head of Electronic Music, has exited the company.

Zimmerman was responsible agent for a roster that included the Weeknd, Calvin Harris, Deadmau5, Kygo, Murda Beatz, and Steve Aoki. In March, Stephanie LaFera stepped in to head the department.

LaFera comes well equipped for the job, as a longtime manager and founder of Little Empire Music.

“The team at WME is already so well rounded, and I’m looking forward to building out the division further,” LaFera told Billboard Dance in March. “As someone who has worked with WME for over a decade on the management side, I have a strong understanding of the company’s philosophy on artist representation, plus the power of WME’s global footprint within all aspects of the entertainment industry. I’m looking forward to harnessing those strengths to help artists continue to grow even further in the genre.”

“Over the course of my career I’ve worked in every genre of electronic music, from Drum & Bass to Techno and everything in between,” said LaFera, “and I know I’ll bring a fresh perspective to this fantastic group of people who are as passionate about Electronic music as I am.”

According to Variety as well as a variety of other rumors swirling around the industry, WME has been preparing to downsize and is in the process of implementing a significant number of layoffs of agents and other staff.

Hopefully, live events return soon enough that some people’s livelihoods aren’t even more permanently damaged.

REPORT: Fortnite Brought In $1 Billion In 2 Years from In-App Purchases

Even in this economy, Epic Games is thriving. The company’s remarkably popular battle royale game Fortnite has reportedly earned $1 billion from in-app sales in just two years.

This, according to Digital Music News, which also reports the game brought in $44.3 million in April alone through its iOS and Android purchases. That’s up significantly from $23.3 million in March and year over year, as purchases added up to $35.4 million in April 2019.

Fortnite has generated over 129 million downloads. The in-app purchases can be attributed to the game’s subscription known as a Battle Pass, costumes or skins, daily items and more.

Fortnite’s business has been booming over the past two years, which goes to show people were seeking out online experiences long before the quarantine. With DJs jumping on board including Marshmello, Diplo, Dillon Franics, Steve Aoki and deadmau5, plus the all-new Party Royale mode, it seems there are endless opportunities for growth and creativity within the game.
