Diddy & Drake Are Hip-Hop’s Highest Earners Over Last Year

Diddy and Drake made a lot of money over the last year, more than $220 million combined and are undoubtedly the Hip-Hop Cash Kings.

The two rap titans are by far the highest earners in hip hop this past year, according to Forbes magazine. Sean “P. Diddy” Combs made a whopping $130 million, Drake made $94 million, JAY-Z made for himself $42 million, Dr. Dre raked in $34.5 million, and Chance the Rapper made $32 million who round out the top five. So you can see Diddy is leading the pack by far and is one step closer to being hip hop’s first billionaire with a current net worth of over $800 million.

Diddy is undeniably the Hip-Hop Cash King of the last decade and this year he added a lot more cash to his pocket thanks to his Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour, his ownership stake in Diageo’s Ciroc vodka, and the sale of a third of his Sean John clothing line. That sale alone raked in $70 million for the hip hop mogul. Drake has had a hugely successful year both on the road and on digital media. He was the most streamed artist on Apple Music over the past year and he also made a lot of money from endorsement deals with Apple, Nike, and Sprite. The bulk of his $94 million was made touring for his Summer Sixteen Tour with Future and his Boy Meets World Tour in Europe.

JAY-Z and Beyonce are the first billionaire couple in hip hop but JAY-Z is pulling the most weight thanks to his $200 million deal with Live Nation and Sprint investing $200 million in TIDAL. Dr. Dre significantly increased his net worth when he and his business partner Jimmy Iovine sold Beats by Dre to Apple. That deal alone earned the rapper/producer a whopping #620 million back in 2014 which is the highest payday for any musician in history. Over the past 12 months, he made $34.5 million from royalties from his vast catalog and ongoing payment from Apple. Chance the Rapper banked a cool $33 million despite being an independent rapper who never sold physical copies of his albums. He distributes his music solely digitally. He also made some big bucks from endorsement deals with Apple and Kit Kat.

Check out the full list.

JAY-Z Drops Three Bonus Tracks For 4:44 On TIDAL

JAY-Z felt like treating his fans to some new music even after his new album 4:44 is still popping.

The rap legend drops three new bonus tracks for the album on TIDAL today and if you haven’t heard them yet then you need to asap. So far they are only available for TIDAL subscribers but will likely be on Apple Music in the coming days, hopefully not weeks. One of the single we did already knew was coming and that’s “Adnis” a dedication to his late father Adnis Reeves.

JAY-Z also released a short film for the single “Adnis” this week on TIDAL. Everyone is wondering why wasn’t this song included on the album in the first place after being the first ever glimpse of the album last month. But Hov is very calculated when he does things so perhaps this is a marketing ply to keep the album fresh. The other two bonus singles are “MaNyfaCedGod” and “Blue’s Freestyle / We Family”

Watch JAY-Z “Kill Jay Z” Footnotes Feat. Van Jones, Trevor Noah & Anthony Anderson

JAY-Z release some more footnotes for his single “Kill Jay Z” off his new album 4:44.

The Roc Nation rapper has been releasing video clippings from the massive production over the last few weeks discussing the storyline with some famous faces. In the footnotes for “Kill Jay Z”, Van Jones, Trevor Noah, and Anthony Anderson opens up about ego and the struggles of black men in America.

“I think your ego is always your best friend and your worst enemy,” Van Jones said. “If you’re an African American man then you have to have ego. If you have ambition then you have that engine of some ego to get you there and I think if you’re an African American man you have to have it twice because the grade is steeper the obstacles are bigger and if you’re not your own hype man then you don’t have a hype man.”

JAY-Z Album “4:44” Now On Apple Music But Not Spotify

JAY-Z released his landmark album 4:44 exclusively on TIDAL on June 30th but now the project is available on Apple Music but not Spotify.

There were some rumors that the album wouldn’t be available for other streaming platforms but a week later JAY-Z decided to make it available on Apple Music but somehow sidestep Spotify which both controls a sizeable portion of the music streaming market. The project is also on Google Play and Amazon Prime Music. The album 4:44 is already certified platinum thanks to a deal with Sprint.

The fact that 4:44 is not on Spotify shouldn’t come as a big shock since JAY-Z pulled all of his music from Spotify back in April. It’s still unclear why Hov take down his music from Spotify but he is a major shareholder in TIDAL which is a major competitor in the music streaming business. Apple Music is second largest music streaming company behind Spotify, but JAY-Z left his music on that platform.

Sprint invested $200 million in TIDAL earlier this year and also bought a million copies of JAY-Z new album for its customers which helped pushed the album into platinum status in the first week.

JAY-Z Uploaded “The Story of O.J.” Animated Video On Vevo

JAY-Z uploaded the full animated video for the single “The Story of O.J.” on his Vevo channel on YouTube.

“The Story of O.J.” is the second single on the album and one of the most talked about because of the messaging. JAY-Z released an animated music video for the single on TIDAL last weekend and now the video is on YouTube for those of us who don’t have a TIDAL subscription. The clip made a play on the famous Looney Tunes cartoons and made reference to O.J. Simpson.

On the single, JAY-Z raps about racism in America and about financial freedom in the black community. “Financial freedom my only hope / F**k livin’ rich and dyin’ broke / I bought some artwork for 1 million / 2 years later, that sh*t worth 2 million / Few years later, that sh*t worth 8 million / I can’t wait to give this shit to my children,” Hov raps. JAY-Z was also accused of using some anti-Semitic lyrics on the single.

Kanye West Terminates TIDAL Contract Amidst JAY-Z Fallout

Kanye West is furious with TIDAL and JAY-Z and is parting ways with the music streaming service amidst his fallout with Hov.

JAY-Z released his new album 4:44 on Friday where he took a few shots at Kanye West. Ye likely took it to heart and decided to fully cut ties with Hov and in the process TIDAL. That is just half of the story because it seems Kanye was having issues with TIDAL long before JAY-Z drop 4:44. All of this started when Ye dropped his last album The Life of Pablo where he famously brought 1.5 million new subscribers to TIDAL.

According to TMZ, Kanye West claims that TIDAL owes him $3 million from a bonus he was promised for bringing 1.5 million new subscribers to the streaming service. Ye said he never get paid for some exclusive music videos he was asked to release on the platform. Now Kanye is saying that TIDAL breach their contract with him so he sent them a letter through his lawyers saying he terminate the contract. Attorneys representing both sides tried to hash things out but was unable to reach an agreement.

It won’t be that easy for Kanye West to completely cut ties with JAY-Z since he is also signed to Roc Nation. The G.O.O.D Music leader is also part owner of TIDAL along with a bunch of other artists. Certainly, he can get out of his deal with Roc Nation, but he would have to sell his shared in TIDAL which won’t happen overnight. Kanye famous released his album The Life of Pablo exclusively on TIDAL prompting a lot of his fans to subscribe to the music streaming service when he announced that his album will never be available on Apple Music and Spotify. A couple weeks later he made the album available on those platforms and some fans threatened to sue him over it.
